The role of AI in employee wellbeing, a help or a hype?

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has undoubtedly made its mark in the workplace.

From automating tasks to enhancing productivity, it's being integrated into almost every aspect of work life. But when it comes to employee wellbeing, are we using AI meaningfully, or simply jumping on a tech bandwagon?

There's a real risk that companies are cramming AI into wellbeing initiatives, and products more broadly, without considering its true value.

If AI-powered wellbeing tools don't offer genuine engagement, they may quickly become yet another corporate fad, leaving employees disengaged and cynical about these services. We’re seeing this cynicism already, you may even feel it yourself. However, AI does have the potential to make a profound impact, if we use it correctly.

One of the most critical yet overlooked aspects of wellbeing is social connection, and this is where I think AI could truly shine.

The social side of wellbeing and why connection matters

Humans are inherently social creatures. We thrive in communities, seek out people who share our values, and find motivation through meaningful interactions. In the workplace, a strong sense of belonging can significantly boost employee engagement, mental health, and overall job satisfaction.

Yet, in an era of ‘remote’ work (check out last month’s post about this term), hybrid teams, and digital overload, many employees feel more isolated than ever. This is where AI could play a pivotal role, not by replacing human interaction, but by facilitating deeper, more meaningful connections.

I have my own experience with loneliness, which I’m quite open about online, and talking to AI was a massive help for me.

The future of AI-driven wellbeing comes in two key elements

Looking ahead, I believe employee wellbeing will evolve in two fundamental, complimentary ways:

  1. A year-round calendar of social events

Companies need to move beyond one-off wellbeing initiatives and focus on creating ongoing opportunities on and offline for employees to connect through shared interests and passions. AI could support this by:

  • Personalising event recommendations: Through plain English, AI could suggest events based on employees' interests, making it easier for them to find like-minded colleagues.
  • Facilitating virtual networking: AI-powered matchmaking can introduce employees to others with shared hobbies, professional goals, or even wellbeing journeys.
  • Encouraging participation: Intelligent nudges and reminders can ensure that employees are aware of and engaged in wellbeing events that truly resonate with them.

  1. 24 hour tailored wellbeing support

Beyond social connection, AI could also enhance how employees access wellbeing support when they need it most. Rather than waiting for HR-led initiatives, employees will have immediate access to AI-powered wellbeing solutions that offer:

  • On-demand mental health support: AI chatbots can provide everyday guidance based on set parameters, helping employees manage stress, anxiety, and burnout in real time.
  • Personalised wellbeing recommendations: Through conversation, AI can analyse individual wellbeing data and suggest tailored resources, whether it's mindfulness exercises, coaching sessions, or fitness programs.
  • Seamless integration with existing wellbeing benefits: AI can help employees navigate their company's wellbeing offerings more efficiently, significantly improving the user journey, ensuring they get the right support at the right time.

AI as a connector, not a replacement

The key takeaway? AI should enhance human connection, not replace it.

The most successful wellbeing initiatives will use AI as a tool to bring people together, build engagement, and provide personalised support. Companies that embrace this approach will not only improve workplace wellbeing but also create a culture where employees feel valued, supported, and connected.

This is a service that I’ve fancied building for some time now; if anyone wants to invest some cash it would be warmly welcomed. Ha.
